- Highly stylized, beguilingly languid and unapologetically anachronistic, Bertrand Bonello envisions an upscale, Belle Epoque-era Parisian brothel as a place suspended in time. With visuals worthy of a Klimt painting, the film, one of Cahier du Cinema’s top ten of 2011, portrays the opiated bordello as both a sanctuary and a house cursed by violence and disease.
